Nick Allman, Coffee Table 4.5 stars The latest in Allman’s Unintended Function series is easily his bravest and most ambitious piece to date. The artist creates a scenario in which a 1930s refrigerator has fallen through the ceiling and crashed into the wooden floor, lying slightly propped open with power cord in tow from the floor above. This is one of the most striking installations in the entire venue, and Allman’s superior craftsmanship is well-utilized: his custom-built wood floor, complete with “damage” from the refrigerator’s descent, and the “ruined” ceiling are so well-executed that the entire situation feels completely believable. The fact that it is presented as a functional item, a coffee table, lends a humorous sense of utility to the installation. (Charles Fox)”

Private Residence Fireplace Mantle

I was invited to fabricate a fireplace mantle for a private residence in Fishers. The home owner wanted something contemporary but still a little rustic. The designer, Nikki Sutton of LEVEL came up with this simple response to the space. Here is a before image of what she was working with:

IndySWANK Check-out Stand

The original design of this check-out stand was for a boutique that folded before opening. Interior Designer, Nikki Sutton of LEVEL and I purchased this used checkout stand from Ell Enterprises with the intent of breathing new life into it for the aforementioned boutique. When they filed for bankruptcy, we were left high, dry and plus one large piece of specialized equipment. I approached Jennifer Rice VonDeylen, owner of IndySWANK in Fountain Square about incorporating it into her store. I showed her a picture of the piece we had to work with and suggested we use her logo as the starting point for the design.

In the interest of keeping cost down, I designed the piece using scrap materials and things I already had lying around the shop: 15″x50″ frosted acrylic panels, MDF, spray paint. Here are some progress images I snapped during fabrication:

: New MDF shell around original check-out stand with new computer station on the left. The “indy” portion of the logo is routed out of the MDF and will be filled with a back painted piece of frosted acrylic.
